Welcome

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has been rated as the top institution in Scotland for research in art and design, and one of the best in the whole of the UK. The results of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) published 17 December 2008 confirm our position as a world class centre of excellence for research in our disciplines. The RAE provides the most rigorous and comprehensive assessment of the quality of research in academic disciplines throughout the United Kingdom.

"The university is home to the outstanding Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, regarded as one of the top colleges in Britain". (Sunday Times University Guide, 21st September 2008)

The School of Fine Art nurtures imaginative enquiry and the creative negotiation and transmission of ideas, meaning and concepts. It does this through the making of resolved artworks and the manifestation of artistic practices that affect our perception - how we see things, and who, what and how we are in the world. We believe that fine art education should develop rigorous, appropriate and particular hands-on skills and abilities through fine art practice, in balance with a critical awareness of historical, theoretical, cultural and social enquiry and the contexts and conditions that influence the philosophy of art and the cultural economy, and that shape art’s place in contemporary culture.

The School aims to offer the highest quality of experience for our students and staff by providing a learning environment which is challenging and supportive. The School is acknowledged internationally as one of Britain’s most dynamic, pioneering and exciting fine art schools and is highly rated for teaching and research. A strong team of staff with national and international reputations, undertakes the teaching. All are practicing artists, curators, writers and theorists, as well as leading academics in their fields, working across all areas of fine art and playing significant roles in the development of visual culture. Staff are engaged in individual practice-led research, collaborative research, and the supervision of graduate research. The School works with a range of institutions, universities, organisations and research bodies nationally and internationally.

A broad range of teaching methods stimulates students to explore inter-disciplinary approaches and collaborative ways of working and to take responsibility for their own learning. Students are supported in an ambitious range of professional practice projects that foster a sense of community and peer learning within a productive, sharing environment. Teaching is face-to-face, professionally relevant, socially in tune and actively encourages ambition. The quality of studio and workshop provision is extremely high, supported by highly trained technical staff. Students come from a wide range of backgrounds and join a large and lively international campus with a strong reputation for its social life and facilities.

Our graduates contribute to an immensely wide range of careers and make a tangible contribution to the social, cultural and economic life of Scotland, the United Kingdom, and beyond.

The School of Fine Art along with The School of Design and The School of Media Arts & Imaging make up Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, which has an international reputation as one of the most successful art colleges in the UK.
